Dr Talat Chaudhri


Talat was the Mayor of Aberystwyth in 2022-3 and 2018-19. He was the Deputy Mayor in 2021-22 and 2017-18. He has been a town councillor since 2015.

Talat is the Chair of Melin Drafod.

Experience

Talat has worked across a broad range of linguistic, academic and technical areas, principally in the higher education sector but also in a variety of other professional and technical work. He has advised on research information policy at a national strategic level. He works for Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (The University of Wales Dictionary).

He holds his PhD from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (now Aberystwyth University), where he also received his MA. He previously studied Ancient and Modern History at the college of Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford.

He was an Assistant Superintendent of Examinations at Aberystwyth University 2016-21.

Research and Teaching

His academic and teaching work is in the field of Celtic Studies. His research is particularly focussed on the origin and early development of the Brythonic languages within wider Indo-European linguistics; he also retains an interest in history, particularly the post-Roman period.

He has taught and lectured in Gloywi Iaith (written and professional Welsh), Modern Breton, historical linguistics, Old Welsh and Modern Breton at Aberystwyth University. He has also taught Modern Welsh and Modern Breton to adults. He has wide experience in language acquisition and education, minority languages, translation, and editorial work.

He has guided successful postgraduate and doctoral research funding applications and has provided informal supervision and editorial support for postgraduate dissertations.

Information Science

His experience in information science is derived from his work as a researcher and professional consultant in research information, research data, and publications management. He has particular expertise in metadata standards, semantic web technologies, knowledge organisation, academic publishing and copyright management.

He has led and has assisted in successful large project funding applications with international higher educational institutions and large commercial stakeholders. He worked at UKOLN in the University of Bath and in Information Services at Aberystwyth University.

He is also a capable web developer and computer programmer with a wide range of technical expertise.
